چکیده

The combination of heavy metals and extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) affects the distribution in microbial aggregates, soil, aquatic systems. This paper aimed to explore binding mechanisms EPSs different molecular weights activated sludge with metals. We extracted stratification components divided into five fractions weight ranges. In three-dimensional fluorescence analysis each fraction, had two peaks, peak A (representing low-excitation tryptophan) B high-excitation tryptophan), static quenching was main reason for between compounds attributable Pb2+ Cu2+. Further exploration suggested that interacted Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ form new substances. effect highest (100 kDa–0.7 ?m) more significant, ability stable. study implies application from is promising. While effectively metals, it can also reduce volume excess sludge.

Advanced sludge treatment affects extracellular polymeric substances to improve activated sludge dewatering.

The management of wastewater sludge, now often referred to as biosolids, accounts for a major portion of the cost of the wastewater treatment process and represents significant technical challenges. In many wastewater treatment facilities, the bottleneck of the sludge handling system is the dewatering operation. Advanced sludge treatment (AST) processes have been developed in order to improve s...

Extraction of Structural Extracellular Polymeric Substances from Aerobic Granular Sludge

To evaluate and develop methodologies for the extraction of gel-forming extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), EPS from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was extracted using six different methods (centrifugation, sonication, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), formamide with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), formaldehyde with NaOH and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) with heat and constant mixing). AGS was ...

Characterization and Molecular Identification of Extracellular Polymeric Substance (EPS) Producing Bacteria from Activated Sludge

The aim of this study was identification and characterization of highly efficient Extracellular Polymeric Substance (EPS) producing bacteria in activated sludge. Among 74 isolated bacteria, 20 EPS-producing bacteria were obtained from wastewater treatment plant of Bojnourd. EPS extraction was performed using absolute ethanol after glucose-enriched culture. Dry weight, concentration, and the rat...

Composition analysis of fractions of extracellular polymeric substances from an activated sludge culture and identification of dominant forces affecting microbial aggregation

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) appear to play a critical role in the formation of bioaggregates, such as sludge flocs, in activated sludge processes. Here, we systematically investigated the composition and chemical structure of various EPS fractions excreted from an activated sludge culture using multi-analysis techniques to examine the ability of the sludge to aggregate. Chemical an...
